About the Player
Childhood Years: Bruce Tahlbot had an
incredibly tough childhood growing up on the streets of Baton Rouge. He
never graduated from high school and spent his childhood playing
shuffleboard in front of the local bars and whore houses. Bruce was
raised by Bill Konkil who owned five bars on the strip.
Career 1962-74:
In his first year on the circuit, he made $26,784 and won 4 respectable
tournaments. The period 1962-1969 was the peak of his career. Over this
timespan, he earned nearly two million dollars and in 1968 he was ranked
number seven in the world. He appeared in two commercials in 1968, and
seven of his matches were televised in 1969. Then tragedy struck. At 2am on
December 27, 1969, he was walking the streets of Baton Rouge totally
drunk and discombobulated. In his
drunken tirade, he walked into a truck and was completely paralyzed.
After two years of rehab, he made it back to the circuit in
1972. He was never the same dominant player he used to be, and in 1974
he retired from the game ranked number 72 in the world. Now Bruce spends
his time coaching some of the best prospects in the game. His top
prospect is Paul Z. Larsseon who is currently ranked in the top twenty in
the world and is improving every day. Bruce recently was reparalyzed
sky-diving from a plane in a wheelchair. He partially recovered from
this accident two weeks ago and managed to escape from the hospital. His
wherabouts are unknown, and he is suspected of two counts of burglary and
four counts of disorderly conduct. If you have any information of his
whereabouts, please contact SHNOG at shnog@shuffle.nat.org.
